Here’s what really matters for getting promoted

Here’s what really matters for getting promoted in the next 60 days — being coachable.

The heart of getting promoted is breaking the negative cultural habit of holding back who you really are, aka being open to growth and change and authentic self-expression.

But it’s possible you’ve been suppressing it for so long, you’re not even sure how to begin, and now it feels scary and terrifying to consider what that would look like.

But here’s how it started especially as the daughter of immigrants.
When you were a kid, your brain was programmed to believe that safety came by doing what made other people happy starting with your parents, who probably sacrificed a huge amount so you could have opportunity.

And to repay them, you started people pleasing, or working extra hard and doing things as perfect as possible.

By the time you get to midlife, you’ve been pretending to be someone you’re not for so long, you’re not even sure how to begin.

The bottom line is you have come to believe that working super hard and doing it perfectly is how you’ll get promoted, and you’re now also suppressing the emotions you’re feeling you have about not being able to be your full self.

And on top of that, work has become its own addiction, a way of compensating for the pent-up emotions.

So when the idea of, “I don’t know how to do that” comes up, you simply have to learn how to process the emotions that come up so you aren’t afraid to feel, and that will actually help you learn and adapt.

You might be making one of these 3 mistakes, and they’re adding to the perception that you’re not a leader.
When you grow up with Asian parents, you probably grew up valuing the whole and the collective, but it also might have created a negative cultural habit of putting everyone else first. And they are making you look less powerful at work.

Here are the 3 mistakes.

1️⃣ You say "I’m sorry" all the time. This immediately puts you in a position where you’re the less powerful person in the conversation. Save I’m sorry for genuine apologies.

2️⃣ You overexplain yourself. This takes up time, and also makes you look less powerful. People don’t need to hear how you got to yes or no, they just need to hear the answer. Give a simple yes or no.

3️⃣ You ask, "Is that OK?" When you ask for other people’s approval, you are giving your power away. So learn to cut this one out.

Nicole’s Book Club is back in session!

One of my favorite things to do in my free time is read. I’m talking fiction, novels, romantasy, all the good stuff. And in 2024, I took reading more seriously than ever — I’m on pace to read 65 books by the end of the year, a new record.

And reading so many books showed me a lot — about the books and their beautiful worlds that give me the best kind of mental break, what I learn from reading, and how much FUN reading is.
